George Calombaris continues on his path as one of Melbourne’s most prolific restaurant owners, with the third Jimmy Grants opening in Ormond last Friday.

After launching the new brand – a modern interpretation of an Athenian souvlaki bar – just off Smith Street in 2013, Calombaris then unveiled the second Jimmy Grants in Melbourne’s new Emporium shopping centre earlier this year. The third venue in the eastern suburb is a partnership with the owners of Gazi and Hellenic Republic.

“There are people from all different cultural backgrounds out here … and that is what Jimmy Grants is all about,” says restaurant manager Guppy Sohi of the decision to set up in Ormond. “There’s a big Greek community over here, there’s a big Jewish community as well. Jimmy Grants is basically the idea that everybody is from somewhere else, so we’re celebrating that idea in Ormond.”

For this third “no-fuss souvlaki bar” it has taken the best bits of the Fitzroy store (although the new space is double the size) and adapted it to the new customer base. Alongside the regular menu of lamb, prawn and chicken souvlakis, garlic chips with feta and oregano, Greek salads and dips, there are two new additions exclusive to the Ormond restaurant. The Ormond is a fish-finger croquette souva that comes with lemon slaw, onion and parsley. It’s a nod to Calombaris’ parents who used to own a fish shop nearby. There is also a baklava ice-cream sandwich.

With more space and a different layout, the Ormond venue has a separate bar area for customers who would like to enjoy a drink (beer, wine and ouzo) with their meal. “It looks fresh and feels different,” Sohi says, telling us there are plans for three more Jimmy Grants to open in 2015, in Richmond, Ascot Vale and Glen Waverley.
