When the whistle blows to start the 2021 AFL Grand Final, it will be on the other side of the country in Perth. While the fanfare associated with the annual footy fest has gone west this year, that doesn’t mean you should let the weekend go unmarked.
A long weekend is, after all, a long weekend and we all deserve something special – a treat to divert our attention for a few glorious hours from the Groundhog Day that is the city’s sixth lockdown.
So, order in – what else? – a feast from one of the city’s top restaurants via Providoor to enjoy after the match. The meal delivery platform features special Grand Final menus from the likes of Supernormal, Estelle and Hanoi Hannah. Dishes on offer include melt-in-your-mouth slow-roasted pork from Andrew McConnell at Builders Arms; Botanical burgers with the lot, and Wagyu porterhouse from Scott Pickett’s Estelle.
Builders Arms Hotel
Fitzroy’s Builders Arms Hotel – a pub bistro run by chef and restaurateur Andrew McConnell – joins Providoor with a match-winning menu to mark the AFL grand final. The feast kicks off (ahem) with a prawn-cocktail roll with butter lettuce and soft herbs before moving on to the main event: slow-roasted Boston butt pork served with apple mustard and fermented chilli sauce; chopped broccoli and freekeh salad; and Builders’ signature potato salad. Builders Arms Hotel AFL Grand Final Menu for two costs $120 and is available via click-and-collect and delivery over the long weekend.
The Botanical Hotel
Burgers and footy are a match made in heaven. The good folk at the Botanical in South Yarra have devised a family-sized feast for the grand final: six burgers with the lot (beer is an optional extra). The kit contains everything you need to make burgers that are a cut above the usual: O’Connor pasture-fed beef patties, milk buns, gruyere cheese, smoky bacon, Burd free range eggs, tomato, lettuce, McClure's pickles, pickled jalapenos, Botanical Hotel relish and a splash of mustard mayonnaise. Botanical Hotel’s AFL Grand Final Burger Pack for six is available on Providoor between September 21 and 26 for $90.
Andrew McConnell has created a Supernormal AFL Grand Final Banquet worth cheering about. In a feast that spans eight dishes, highlights include Wagyu beef buns with house-made chilli; Supernormal’s feted New England lobster rolls; and roast pulled pork shoulder with baos, crispy chilli, black vinegar and pickled cucumber. Don’t forget drinks: a Hop Nation Organic Lager four-pack and a bottle of 2020 Zonzo Estate Pinot Noir are included in the package. Supernormal’s AFL Grand Final banquet with beer and wine costs $225 for two and is available from September 21 to 26.
Behold the Half-Timer, a grand final special from popular Melbourne chain Hanoi Hannah. Refuel at half-time with a Vietnamese-inspired spread comprising six mini-sticky pork banh mi with pickled veg, chilli mayo, coriander, chilli and lemongrass chicken ribs with a spicy, zesty sauce. Hanoi Hannah’s Grand Final Weekend Special ($79) is available from September 24 to 26.
Northcote restaurant Estelle straddles the line between fine diner and neighbourhood haunt. One of the city’s defining dining experiences, the menu showcases chef Scott Pickett’s consummate technical skill without veering off into pretension. On Providoor, Estelle offers three versions – standard and vegetarian menus, and a mix of the two – of its indulgent six-course degustation feast. To mark the grand final, Estelle is upping the ante with the addition of two special add-on options: dry-aged, bone-in Rib Eye for two or a 250g Wagyu porterhouse for one, which also comes sliced to share. Other Grand Final add-ons include the Footy Four Pack ($24), a Wolf of the Willows Brewery mixed offering, and a bottle of Rob Dolan’s 2019 Black Label Blanc de Blanc ($32) for the wine lovers.
