As more and more of us slowly head back to work, it’s good to know there’s plenty of summer still to be enjoyed as the Royal Croquet Club arrives in Melbourne from January 16 at Birrarung Marr. Complete with a giant croquet pitch, DJs, bars with plenty of Pimms, tennis on the big screen and food curated by Broadsheet, we’re pleased to announce another special collaboration: Gelato Messina’s International Soup Kitchen.

Riffing off the Seinfeld Soup Nazi episode with its “No soup for you!” catch phrase, Messina has developed a soup-kitchen concept with four gelato sundae flavours in cans that reference Campbell Soup’s iconic tins.

Of course, this isn’t the first time people have repurposed the familiar labels. In 1962, artist Andy Warhol integrated the design into a series of pop art silkscreens which cemented the soup in popular culture. One of Warhol’s works, Small Torn Campbell Soup Can (Pepper Pot)(1962), was sold for $11.8 million at auction in 2006. Messina’s version, however, can be yours for just $9.

Despite their soupy names, these cans will be filled with four new gelato flavours which reference the cuisines of the other vendors at the Broadsheet Summer Barbeque; Mr Claws, Misschu, DOC and Meatmother.

The new flavours are:

Black Forest Bisque – chocolate-fondant gelato, cherry jam, kirsch cream, kirsch-soaked sponge.

Faux Pho – salted-coconut sorbet, kaffir-lime marshmallow, lychee coconut cream, chilli-cashew crunch.

Zuppa Duppa – hazelnut gelato, wild-strawberry preserve, pistachio crunch, Amaretti biscotti.

American Chow Down – peanut gelato, Oreo custard, cream-cheese mousse and pretzel crunch.

Messina’s International Soup Kitchen will be serving these tins of frozen dessert for two weeks only at the Royal Croquet Club. It will also be donating some of the sundaes to the Salvation Army.

The Broadsheet Summer Barbeque at the Royal Croquet Club will run from January 16 to February 1.
