When Frankie’s Tortas and Tacos opened in a former kebab stand in an empty Collingwood lot in December, it catered solely to the lunch crowd.

Nothing cost more than $15, and there was a simple choice: tortas or tacos. (The former is a Mexican-style stuffed sandwich made with cheese that’s melted on a grill.)

You could eat your meal in the sun on a bright-red plastic stool, or grab it to go. Now, Frankie’s is doing daily breakfasts and dinner on weekends, too.

“We’ve always wanted to do it, but it was just so busy from the start that we had to get the lunches all going really, really good before we could push our hours,” says co-owner Todd Vaneste.

The first dinner service is on Friday February 21, and will continue on a trial basis for the time being.

“First we want to see what the crowd is like before we can find out the best nights for us to actually run,” says Vaneste.

There are new items coming to the menu as well: a torta with fried bologna and cheese; a vegan taco with spiced and fried zucchini and green beans topped with a red salsa; and a vegetarian torta with fried zucchini, cheese, lettuce and coriander. Prices vary but everything's still under $15.

Breakfast has been quietly happening for the last few weeks. There are two brekkie tortas – a chorizo and egg number with grilled onion and jalapeno, and a vegetarian version that swaps the snag for mushroom. The tortas are only available from 9.30am to 11.30am, but the $3 brewed coffee is available all day.

“The reason we’re [extending hours] is to try and feed the whole community; we’re broadening our scope so we can do that more often,” Vaneste says. “It’s a pretty fluid business. Time will tell what our final hours actually end up being.”

Frankie’s Tortas and Tacos is now open from 9.30am to 4pm (or until sold-out) on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday; and from 9.30am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday.
