On Saturday 19 October, Collingwood design and arts cultural complex Magic Johnston plays host to a special event that’s set to showcase some of Melbourne’s rising artisan and underground bakers. Curated by Everyday Coffee and assembled by Open Season and Magic Johnston, the Flour Market Spring Bake Sale is a huge celebration of baked goods, with coffee and milkshakes for good measure.
“I noticed that there are all these new bakeries and that there’s a bit of a renaissance of artisan baking, especially specialty baking,” says Mark Free, event mastermind and Everyday Coffee co-owner. “A lot of them, many of whom we stock, don’t have a retail outlet but are doing really good stuff. I just wanted to bring it all together, build a bit of a community, get those individuals talking and put them in the same space and context as far the consumer’s concerned.”
Showcasing their wares on the day will be Lune Croissant, 5 and Dime, Matt Forbes, Tivoli Road Bakery, Freckle, Bakewell & Co, Sweet Valentyne and Danjo, with coffee provided by Everyday Coffee and classic milkshakes and spiders by the Sungold sponsored Open Season Milk Bar. Expect croissants, cakes, cookies, bread, bagels, brownies, doughnuts and pies, with plenty of exclusive treats on the day.
At this stage the Flour Market is set to be a quarterly seasonal affair but Free is keen to make it a regular event. “I’d like to do this as regularly as possible and would love to take it across the river. North, south, east and west; as regularly as we can get an audience for it. To make it its own self-contained market, now that would be great!”
A booklet of information on each of the stallholders will be available on the day so you can keep track of your favourite suppliers. Everyday Coffee will also be donating all of the day’s stall profits to Familia Moja Children’s Home, an orphanage in Kenya that is building its own bakery so they can bake bread for the residents and sell for a profit.
Flour Market runs on Saturday 19 October from 9am to 3pm at Magic Johnston, 27-29 Johnston Street, Collingwood.
Broadsheet is a proud partner of this event.
