Nomad Events in Wodonga doesn’t have standard operating hours. Husband-and-wife owners Nick and Connie Bond – who previously ran Hollywood’s Pizza Bar – release opening dates on the bar’s website and Instagram account on the 15th of each month.

The couple hosts monthly series and one-off events, including gin parties and Greek wine nights. (When the bar is open for walk-ins, but there’s no special event or theme, the pair posts an image of the actor Christopher Walken).

On themed nights, the couple designs the cocktails and drinks menu to match the occasion. Other times, you can expect Negronis, Palomas and Spicy Mango Margaritas, as well as more inventive creations like the Pearfection (French pear vodka, elderflower liqueur, pear nectar, fresh-pressed lemon) served with dried pear slices.

The emphasis on cocktails reflects the bar’s origin story. The Bond started selling pre-batched cocktails during Covid lockdowns. “People still come up to us in the street and thank us for providing them an experience at home during the pandemic,” says Connie. “They were able to have date nights and celebrate occasions. It really helped with our mental health, too.”

The rest of the drinks menu is beers and Australian wines (with the exception of French champagne).

The food menu includes easy bar snacks like nuts, olives, French fries, and cheese and salumi plates.

When Nomad Events is closed Nick develops hospitality training facilities for disengaged youth around the country through not-for-profit Indie Education.

“By only opening randomly we have created supply and demand,” Nick says. The flexible hours also make life easier for the couple; they have two kids under 11. “We will however scale trading hours during the warmer months and take advantage of those beautiful balmy Victorian nights.”
