Seven days after opening new Richmond cafe Touchwood with friends from Tall Timber, Matt, Kael and Loren Sahely (the family behind Pillar of Salt) have opened another cafe, Barry, on High Street, Northcote.

Barry’s light-filled interior and clean white walls are a welcoming sight to passers-by who are perhaps on their way to the Palace Westgarth Cinema next door or Terra Madre, the perpetually busy organic food store along the same stretch of High Street.

The interior fitout by Techne Architects (who recently designed Collingwood’s Jimmy Grants and Prahran Hotel) has both functionality and good looks in mind. Wall-to-wall custom shelving and crates that function as drawers underneath the coffee counter make for efficient storage, while serving as bright spots for the potted plants lining the wall.

Devised by head chef Stephen Svensen from Pillar of Salt, the menu is not afraid to branch out from the typical cafe staples. The old faithfuls like eggs benedict are still there, but it’s worth taking a second look at the less traditional options. The chilli scrambled eggs with bacon, spring onions and parmesan is imported from the Pillar of Salt menu, and Matt and Kael’s dad provided the inspiration for the unlikely yet impressive toast combo of peanut butter, tomato and salt and pepper.

Recognising their neighbours’ penchant for healthy foods, the menu is health conscious without sacrificing on taste. Gluten free breakfast options include granola with poached fruit and a Thai coconut sago pudding with mango, lime syrup and strawberries. The salads will satisfy carnivores and vegans alike, while the towering wagyu beef burger and Korean chicken kimchi sub are nothing to sneeze at.

Coffee is by 5 Senses, made on a slick custom-made Synesso or on pour over or Aeropress. Freshly blended drinks packed with more super foods - think fruity mixes with cacao and almond milk - are also being trialed on the menu.
