We’ve just had Melbourne’s first hot week since spring began, so it’s a logical time for the team at Bar Liberty to open its back courtyard, Drinkwell.

The tiny courtyard just off Johnston Street has Astroturf grass, a big mural by Melbourne artist Kitt Bennett and room for up to 40 people.

Each Sunday in November there will be a geographically-themed menu to accompany Bar Liberty’s formidable wine list and Drinkwell’s tap beers and cocktails. Sunday lunch is $45 per person.

This Sunday executive chef Casey Wall and Bar Liberty head chef Zackary Furst have overseen a menu by Bar Liberty’s chef de partie, Alex Nishizawa. Both Wall and Nishizawa are from the United States and their menu will be inspired by their home and by Mexico.

Snacks include fresh tortillas with an elote-style salad, and tostadas with kingfish. Mains cover barbeque trout with grits, fried green tomatoes, and a ranch-dressed salad. Dessert is a rhubarb Buckle – a crusty-bottomed and crumble-topped fruit slice.

Following Sundays will involve menus influenced by New Zealand, Italy and Australia.
