Melbourne has many markets, but this is our most iconic. As we note in the pages of Broadsheet Melbourne Food, taking a trip to the Queen Vic is a ritual as universal as going to the footy. The central location and vast range of traders has kept the market vital since it opened in 1878.

There’s a staggering range of fruit and vegetable stalls scattered across multiple sheds. Butter, cheeses, smallgoods, pickled olives and other are found in the dedicated deli hall; and the Meat Hall is alive with butchers and fishmongers bawling for customer attention. A lot of what you’ll find here simply isn’t available at the supermarket, and common items such as apples and potatoes are cheaper and better quality.

You’d need a truck to transport an accurate cross-section of all that the market offers, but this prize highlights some of our favourite produce.

  • A jar of house-made almond, brazil nut and cashew butter, and two chocolate-chip brioche sticks to spread it on, from M&G Caiafa.

  • A purple cauliflower, three baby globe artichokes and three cobs of corn, thanks to G&C Fresh Produce.
