It’s been more than a year since acclaimed Hobart chef David Moyle revealed he was opening a bar and eatery upstairs from Longrain in the CBD. At last, a start date has been announced: Longsong will open on November 3.

“We set about to transform the incredible space above Longrain, creating a new, casual and relaxed bar atmosphere,” says owner John van Haandel in a statement. “It’s Longrain’s naughty little brother.”

Moyle and the van Haandels have a relationship dating back to Moyle’s time as head chef at Circa and later The Pacific Dining Room in Byron Bay.

The minimal second-storey space, with exposed brick walls and high, pitched ceilings, used to be a horse stable, and its original floors remain.

“The bones are bloody fantastic,” Moyle told Broadsheet last year, adding that the aim, design-wise, was to ensure the revamped space continued reflect its past while also being comfortable.

His menu will focus on wood-grilled meats and vegetables, plus smaller snacks and light salads, all of which will lean Thai but won’t replicate the offering downstairs. The drinks list will emphasise local breweries, winemakers and liquor producers.
