It’s known for its retail offering – and enviable food halls – but next year Australian retail giant David Jones will open its first mini-supermarket in South Yarra.

The standalone food store, David Jones Food, will live in the Capitol Grand retail precinct currently under construction on the corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street from 2019.

“We are confident the new David Jones Food proposition will resonate strongly with the local customer, delivering a new level of food quality and experience to the area,” David Jones chief executive David Thomas said in a statement.

Around 90 per cent of the products in the 500-square-metre retail store will be under the recently launched premium David Jones Food label, but a range of other brands, many exclusive to David Jones, will also be available.

Premium produce including pre-packed meat and seafood; a selection of pre-packed vegetables, salads and fruits; as well as quality ready meals will cater to the busy lifestyles of inner-city residents.

“We know that when it comes to food, our customers want us to provide provenance, freshness and convenience but also that our offering needs to be accessible to their busy lives,” says Thomas.

There’ll also be a select range of grocery products including ice-cream, confectionary, sauces, and herbs and spices. And wine, of course.

The smaller-format South Yarra store is an attempt to capture a local customer-base looking for a convenient alternative to the existing David Jones Food Hall in Bourke Street Mall.

David Jones has plans to open several more standalone food stores over the coming years across Australia.
