Celebrated Melbourne chef Andrew McConnell has just added a new address to the clutch of leases he holds across his restaurant group, which includes Cutler & Co, Cumulus Inc, Builders Arms Hotel and Supernormal.

McConnell has just signed a seven-year lease on a 384-square-metre ground-floor space in Cavendish House at 33 Russell Street. Apparently the chef had no immediate plans to open a new restaurant, and is often approached when new sites become available, but connected strongly with the new site.

"33 Russell Street is a truly impressive and historic site and one of Melbourne's most beautiful rooms. Opportunities like this are a rare find and when they come along it is really exciting. The room deserves to be celebrated,” McConnell said in a statement.

Built in 1927, and designed in the Chicago School style, Cavendish House faces the Chanel building and sits on the corner of Russell Street and Flinders Lane. Until recently the space was home to high-end audio suppliers Bang & Olufsen.

While the new restaurant is as yet unnamed, the plan is to create a new concept rather than a satellite restaurant in the vein of Cumulus Up or Supernormal Canteen.

The chef is currently in Los Angeles appearing at the LA Food Bowl and is unavailable for comment. Expect more details on the new restaurant when he returns.
