Coming Soon: Melbourne’s Mexican Institution La Tortilleria To Open a Sibling Diner, Chilpa, in Highett

La Tortilleria is the real deal. And now the team behind it is heading to Highett.
Since the Mexican-born Gerardo Lopez and Australian Diana Hull founded the diner in 2013, it’s become a quiet beacon for true-to-tradition Mexican food in Kensington. They make some of the most legit tortillas in town – and draw a crowd for it.
On March 10, they’re opening a sibling venue for La Tortilleria, called Chilpa (an abbreviation of chilpayate, which means “young child”), in the south-east. It’s taking over the former Hot Lips Hacienda site on Railway Parade.
Expect all the signature tacos (including the saucy birria), tostadas and quesadillas La Tortilleria is known for – all made using the team’s topnotch nixtamal tortillas and totopos. Plus, that must-order meal-ender, the Mexican flan and, of course, Margs and Palomas galore.
Chilpa by La Tortilleria is opening at 2 Railway Parade, Highett on March 10.
