Coming Soon: Cinema Nova Team To Open a Food-Focused Movie Theatre in Brunswick East This December

Barbenheimer, Taylor Swift, and two brothers named Mario and Luigi helped bring cinemagoers back to theatres this year. And with the SAG-AFTRA strike looking likely to be resolved soon , it seems like as good a time as any for Melbourne to welcome a new movie theatre.

Natalie Miller AO and Barry Peak, two of the key figures behind Cinema Nova in Carlton, just announced the opening of a new movie theatre complex as part of the East Brunswick Village development.

Fomo Cinemas – technically short for “food and movies”, rather than “fear of missing out” – will have six screens playing blockbusters and cult classics, with programming leaning more towards mainstream titles than the indie gems Nova is best known for.

The concept centres on a high-quality food offering, inspired by dine-in theatres like Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, New York – which has published its own cookbook, and is known for matching dishes and drinks to what’s playing onscreen – and Alamo Drafthouse , a luxury chain with locations across the United States.

The new cinema is due to commence screenings in December – in time for anticipated summer releases like Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things ; Ferrari , a biopic of the Italian sports car magnate starring Adam Driver; and the Paul Giamatti and Alexander Payne reunion special The Holdovers.
