It’s hard to keep a secret in this town. On Wednesday, word filtered outward from Chapel Street that a new pop-up was in the offing from the organisation behind Chin Chin, Baby and Kong. The reason for the buzz was a former retail space suddenly covered in graffiti spruiking the three restaurants, with what looked like the makings of a bar.

As rumours swirled around the sudden arrival of a new restaurant in the same month as Kong's opening on the Richmond end of the road, it turned out the truth was, as usual, a little different.

When reached by phone, a Lucas Group spokesperson was happy to explain that the space had been decorated for the company’s staff “Christmas” party, a one-night-only affair with catering by Massive Wieners and a food stall from Saigon Sally.

When pressed, the spokesperson confirmed that the space, at 98 Chapel Street, will be home to the group’s next restaurant. Due to launch in June next year, the only details we’re in a position to give away at this early stage is that the cuisine will be Asian.

Although unconfirmed, the success of Chin Chin and now Kong has led to speculation that the formula could be easily replicated south of the river, with Kong’s bustling, Korean-led menu and takeaway options seemingly the best fit for the space.

June 2015 may seem a long way away, but we’ll have more details of the Lucas Group’s new southside venture as soon as they come to hand.
