With Melbournians lamenting the queues and waiting lists that are the norm at restaurants these days, the insight to expand in a clever, patron-friendly manner is to be applauded. Windsor favourite Charlie Dumpling has taken the initiative and done just that.

Located just a few doors down from its parent, the premise of dedicated takeaway service, Charlie Dumpling Jr, is simple: offer the same good food (or at least the bits that will fare well on the journey home) without the wait. You can phone ahead, order online or onsite and receive your meal fast.

But the appeal of this new venue does not rest solely in its ability to serve you on the spot. If you look carefully, you’ll see the entrance to Bā Charlie, a hidden speakeasy-style bar hidden behind a secret door, not unlike Jungle Boy nearby. It’s a clever complement to the eatery and the perfect place for a drink while you wait to be called up the road.

But be warned, with a delicious bar menu from executive chef Dylan Roberts that includes exclusive offerings such as cheeseburger dumplings (if they pull it off, this will be the greatest fusion attempt of 2014), you just might not make it to dinner.
