Dine Out Recap: Gertrude Street Enoteca Was Reborn for One Night at Carnation Canteen

Brigitte Hafner and Audrey Shaw are two powerhouse Victorian chefs. For Broadsheet ’s debut Dine Out winter food festival Hafner (the force behind Hot-Listed Tedesca Osteria alongside James Broadway) and Shaw collaborated on a one-night-only dinner at Shaw’s Hot-Listed Carnation Canteen.
The dinner was a celebration of the venue Hafner and Broadway spent 17 years running until it closed in 2020: Gertrude Street Enoteca, one of Fitzroy’s earliest wine bars.
The gorgeous event saw Carnation Canteen packed to the brim as the team prepared dishes from the Gertrude Street Enoteca days. Standouts included smoked eel pâté with beetroot relish, pomme boulangere (slices of potato slow-cooked with onion) and a chocolate and hazelnut tart with candied mandarin for dessert.
The pairing was especially meaningful as Shaw worked under Hafner at Tedesca Osteria before opening Carnation Canteen.
