At a time where eateries are popping up left, right and centre, we’ve never had more choice of places to eat and drink. Unfortunately though, for many of us eating out isn’t even an option.

For 10 years, DineSmart has been recruiting restaurants and cafes to get involved in their grassroots charity initiative for the holiday season. This year, from November 11 to December 31, the initiative aims to once again unite restaurants and diners to help the homeless by providing an accessible way to donate to local charities.

During the event, each table from participating restaurants will be asked to add a $2 or more donation to their bill. The donation will then be automatically added to the bill through a non-GST button on the point of sale system.

DineSmart is part of grassroots organisation StreetSmart; one of two annual initiatives that make it easier to give to the less fortunate, by association with something we do so often in Melbourne: eat out. Under the same banner, Founder Adam Robinson has set up CafeSmart, an initiative which asks cafes to pledge $1 from every coffee sold on the day (in June) which is donated to a local charity in the same suburb.

Every year more restaurants get involved, and DineSmart continues to top the total amount donated by charitable restaurants and diners. This year it aims to raise $400,000 and fund over 100 homeless projects.

Longrain owner Sam Christie, whose Melbourne and Sydney restaurants have been involved since 2006 and 2012 respectively says, “Opening restaurants in Surry Hills, Kings Cross and Melbourne CBD, we see a lot of homeless people and this is a great opportunity to help.”

"It is very easy; all my staff and customers are completely on board," he adds.

Other participating restaurants involved this year are Mamasita, Cutler & Co., Piqueos, Builders Arms Hotel, Izakaya Den and more.
