A warehouse down a laneway on Kerr Street will soon be a buzzing cultural hub and wine bar – for a little while at least. Cake Wines recently moved in to spruce up the space, where they will run a program of live music, art, film, talks, food, wine and workshops from August 8 to 31.
Cake Wines founders Mike Smith and Glen Cassidy started the wine brand with the aim of supporting the “cultural ideas” they were passionate about, beginning by donating 10 per cent of proceeds to independent radio in Sydney and Melbourne. “Running bigger events drawing on different aspects of culture became a natural extension of what Cake is about,” Smith explains.
This isn’t the first time Cake has turned an unlikely space into a friendly neighbourhood wine bar, where people can sample their wines and discover music from local indie labels. However, the educational component of their cultural repertoire is a relatively recent addition. “[This time] the School of Life, Next Wave Supper Club and Dumbo Feather Presents sessions aim to open up some dialogue around different cultural ideas and topics that people can learn from,” says Cassidy.
The School of Life’s popular ‘How to Have Better Conversations’ workshops and Next Wave Supper Club’s wine-fuelled discussions are flanked by similarly educational events such as the honey harvesting workshop by Kinfolk magazine and a session of Hip Hop Yoga presented by Dumbo Feather and Yoga 213.
The gigs showcase a variety of music styles, from the chilled-out Andras Fox, poppy crooners Sui Zhen and Alpine to the fresh sounds of a line-up of emerging bands presented by music blog All I Do Is Listen.
Wine will naturally be the centrepiece and Cake Wines will be launching their new Cake Young Winemaker Series, a small batch release of wines made in collaboration with emerging young winemakers from around the country. The first release in the series is a 2011 Hunter Valley Shiraz by Richie Harkham, and the launch event is to be accompanied by a Wok + Wine dinner, in which diners are encouraged to get hands-on with a 30-kilogram pile of prawns.
There will be more pop-up events in the coming months for Cake Wines, but in the meantime there is good wine, great music and stimulating discussions to be had in a surprisingly charming warehouse in the backstreets of Fitzroy.
