You know you’re in trouble if you have to eat at the airport. It always reminds me of a giant shopping mall full of bland take-away outlets, an uninspiring way to start a journey. Thankfully Shannon Bennett has opened a new Cafe Vue signaling a change to the existing travel culture at Melbourne Airport’s International Terminal.

Cafe Vue offers a selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner by way of breads, cakes, chocolates, pastries, coffee and more formal dining. Eat in with a croque-monsieur, wagyu burger, roast poussin, or confit ocean trout, or take a box with you on the flight. Now you can eat well up in the sky with a Vue package, wrapped neatly for your in-flight meal.

If you’ve got some time, the cafe is a nice place to sit too, with a glass of champagne and a plate of macaroons as you take in the view of the planes through large high windows that look over on to the airfield. The interior is sharp and colourful with bright textured finishes, oversized pot plants with Emily Floyd designed taupery, mirrors and tiling throughout the space.

The cafe sits just after the duty free section, and there’s no mistaking you’re in an airport, but take your iPod to cancel out the duty free spruikers and departure announcements if need be.

In a bid to extend options available to international travellers, there’s word another welcome addition soon to arrive at Melbourne airport is Frank Camorra’s Movida.
