Known for its whole-wheat breads and range of expertly crafted pastries, Baker D. Chirico has opened a new – and sadly temporary – store on Therry Street near Queen Victoria Market.

The store will focus on festive specials such as baby panettone and mince tarts. The bakery has also set the space up as a hamper gift shop where you can fill a basket and get it artfully wrapped up for Christmas.

Melbourne-based designer and illustrator Alice Oehr took care of the fit-out, as well as designing the baker’s holiday packaging, and a special giant Speculoos biscuit and its wrapping.

“My crazy concept was ‘12 days of Christmas at Baker D. Chirico’, where one's true love could give them a treat from Baker D. on each of the 12 days,” says Oehr.

Her colourful creations are inspired by market and delicatessen signage, with wood fruit palettes used as shelves – another homage to the locale.
