Last night, as it counted down its top 100, the S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna World’s Best Restaurant Awards named Attica on Glen Eira Road in Ripponlea the 32nd best restaurant on earth.

Although it’s a slight slip from its spot at 21 last year, the placement is a colossal achievement for head chef Ben Shewry and his team. It also further solidifies Melbourne’s standing as a food city that truly stands up on a world scale.

The only other Australian restaurant to make the Top 100 was Peter Gilmore’s Sydney institution Quay, which moved down from 48th position in 2013 to 60th this year.

The World’s 50 Best Academy is made up of 27 separate regions around the world and each has its own panel comprised of food critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded industry professionals.

Coming in at number one was René Redzepi ’s Copenhagen restaurant, Noma; while El Celler de can Roca in Spain took second place and Italy’s Osteria Francescana came in third.
