“Natsu” comes from the Japanese word natsumeku, which describes nature as it changes from spring to summer. Natsu is festive; it’s playful; it’s abundance; it’s warm days and balmy nights.

Which makes it the ideal name for Andrew McConnell’s residency at the National Gallery of Victoria in January. Supernormal Natsu will run for 10 days during the Triennial EXTRA festival, which is part of the blockbuster Triennial exhibition beginning on December 15.

A special Broadsheet Brunch at Supernormal Natsu will take place on January 21 from 10am. The all-inclusive tickets are $45 per person and will be made available exclusively to Broadsheet readers. A Natsu Spritz and chilled genmaicha tea will be served alongside a specially devised menu from Andrew McConnell. This will be the only brunch service at Supernormal Natsu. Special talks from NGV curators will be held throughout the event.

The Garden Restaurant will be transformed into Natsu with large oak tables and benches by Geelong designers Relm. Low wooden counters will line the perimeter of the space giving diners views of the gardens and the action of the Triennial EXTRA Festival.

During the day, the garden – Natsu’s front lawn – will welcome picnickers with bento boxes available for pre-order filled with vegetables, pickles, seaweed salads and other savoury snacks. Vegan and vegetarian options are available.

Inside, McConnell’s menu will include cold soba noodles, bao, seafood and yakitori grilled on the charcoal hibachi grill set up on the outdoor terrace.

Triennial EXTRA runs for 10 nights and celebrates art, culture, food and music with guest DJs and performances in among architecture and bars.

Supernormal Natsu is a full restaurant installation that forms part of the Triennial EXTRA Festival at the National Gallery of Victoria.
