Dedicated students and committed procrastinators alike understand the value of a quick break from work.

Twenty-five-year-old Elliot Brown knows the feeling well. While studying a town planning degree at RMIT, Brown is also working down the road at Uniqlo at Emporium. “I'm quite new actually," says Brown. "It’s only my fourth or fifth week."

Brown might be a rookie on the shop floor, but a few years at RMIT’s city campus means he knows his way around an afternoon mind-clearer. Here’s Brown's ideal break.

3pm – If he’s working, Elliot will pick up something to eat from Emporium. “There’s the classic Jimmy Grants, which has great souvlakis, and Rice Workshop for cheap teriyaki chicken rice bowls with seaweed,” Brown says.

Supercharger is another favourite. The vegan kitchen is a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure, where you can pick from tonnes of healthy options to build your perfect bowl.

3.10pm – Food in hand, Brown will head out to find a place to eat it. Returning to Australia after working in Malaysia for a year, he has a new-found love for the city.

“Coming from a town planning background, I love the intimacy of Melbourne,” he says. “The complexity of the streets. It’s very dynamic.”

Despite the pull of the lanes, he also gravitates towards more open, go-to public spaces such as the State Library lawn or City Square.

“It’s nice and open, it’s a space in which everyone is just doing the same thing, coming to relax,” he says, of these prime people-watching spots.

3.17pm – If the weather isn’t great, he’ll head down to Melbourne City Library on Flinders Lane.

“I'm big on borrowing books – I’m still a student,” Brown smiles. “I can take my breaks, have coffee, it’s a really nice space for me.”

Upstairs in the library is a great space to catch up on some work, or just listen to something. “I’m always listening to podcasts,” Brown says. “Things about writing or reading. My current favourite is the Art of Charm podcast.”
