The Melbourne hospitality scene is always in flux. Here are the new venues we got excited about this month, and the ones we were sad to see go.
Openings and new coverage
• First look: Junda Khoo’s Malaysian beer hall Ho Liao is finally open.
• Everything is made in-house at the new South Melbourne shop of Luke’s Banh Mi.
• First look: two Michelin-cred chefs take on ancient Korean food at Sogumm in Cremorne.
• First look: find custard-filled Sicilian doughnuts at Kobi Kafe in Brunswick West.
• First look: two Everleigh alumni open Pendant , an inviting bar with a relaxed pub feel.
• First look: Preston wine bar Peaches is the casual “older goth sister” of daytime diner Skinnys.
• First look: Martinis and falafels go together at Nobody’s Baby in South Yarra.
• The Coffee Bar has opened behind a roller door in Brunswick East.
• First look: Crop (formerly Green On) brings its $16 salads to Fitzroy.
•First look: Beneath Driver Lane’s new sibling Baby Driver has Latin American street snacks and DJs spinning funk.
• An ex-DOC chef makes pizza three ways at South Melbourne Market’s Pizzateca Lupa.
• First look: To Be Frank brings focaccia sandwiches and dulce de leche “bombs” to Brunswick East.
• First look: Clifton Hill scores a new laid-back cafe and bar, Raffy’s.
• Breadcetera is the curated grocer Malvern East was missing.
• First look: an ex-Builders Arms chef delivers French bistro classics at 98 Lygon.
• First look: Darling Group opens a 350-seat venue at the Botanic Gardens.
Closures
• Formerly Hot-Listed North Melbourne restaurant Earth Angels closed just over a year after opening.
• Tarts Anon Cremorne is now closed – but a new location is on its way.
