99 Problems is the new kid on the Johnston Street block. Owners Dion Waterman and Dan Michael Jones' background in music and design breeds a dive-bar with a simple aesthetic. The mural by Robot Academy is a fresh take on a retro look, which sets the tone for the venue. From the classic gold leaf sign on the door to the denim cushion covers by Note to Self, and the Empirical Style light fittings, clever pieces speak of the bar's subtlety.

A relaxed but considered approach carries through the small, intimate rooms to the outside area that serves the patrons as a semi-foliaged, red lit courtyard in which to drink. Toasties are the simple and only snack but one that sits well with the wine and a solid spirits list. Tiger and Monteiths are on tap pouring beer and cider.

Tucked away with only the hint of a few bikes tied up out the front giving it away, 99 Problems is a welcome new fixture on the hodgepodge section of Johnston Street.
