Just Falafs doesn’t take life too seriously, but it does do some seriously good grub.
Inspired by the falafel bars of New York City, mother/son team Teresa and Troy Christou (ex- Welcome to Thornbury and Brunswick Mess Hall) wanted to bring something new to North Fitzroy. Teresa’s parents ran a popular bakery nearby a few decades ago.
In an area not exactly bursting with great takeaway options, they’ve nailed their brief. Nestled inside the old Singing Whale toy store, JF puts a modern twist on the falafel pita. It’s in a similar vein to Tahina up in Northcote and Very Good Falafel in Brunswick: crisp, fresh and 100 per cent vego.
The Sabich (with roast eggplant and egg) and Harissa (fresh harissa and pickled cabbage) are popular; though the biggest crowd pleaser is the Haloumi, which comes with a good helping of fried cauliflower. Each wrap comes with Israeli salad, house-made hummus and tahini.
There are standalone salads, dips, chips and cakes; but it’s all about those pitas. Our tip: take them over the road to Edinburgh Gardens, and pair with some homemade iced tea or lemonade.
