“Thought, personality and care have almost been obliterated by online shopping,” says Caroline Ball, who, along with Matt Gurry and Ant White, has created Sorry Thanks I Love You, a new kind of online space for the modern gift-giver. “We’re trying to bridge the gap between the two by helping the buyer make a heartfelt decision and letting the receiver be touched by the quality and thought behind the gift.” It’s a refreshing departure from the often unwelcoming, gimmicky websites that have dominated the field thus far, and the experience feels more like, as Ball says, “a gallery space rather than a supermarket.”
“The whole philosophy of the site is centred around the idea of giving and so it's important to us that this translates into the user experience,” says Ball. Having lived and worked together in Paris, New York, Melbourne and Sydney, the store conveys the trio’s combined tastes for local and international interesting gifts, from fresh flowers, handmade accessories, gourmet food, and craft beverages, to their free gift-wrapping and ‘tailor it’ quiz; an option that shapes the buyer’s choices through a series of quirky and personal questions.
Among the talent is hook + Albert, a New York based men’s sock and accessories brand, Portland General Store, an organic skincare company known for their popular Whisky After-Shave Splash, and Finnish brand, Marimekko, in their first online-only retail partnership. Australian collaborators include Dinosaur Designs, with a curated range of their vibrant, resin-carved homewares and jewellery, Bruny Island Cheese Co. in southern Tasmania, and apothecary teas from Perth-based company, The Seventh Duchess.
In preparation for Christmas, Sorry Thanks I Love You is launching pop-up stores in Sydney and Melbourne. There’ll be some exclusive new products, as well as whisky, tea, salmon and cheese tastings. Be sure to check them out online for their full range of quality gifts or at Pran Central in Prahran next week.
The Melbourne pop-up store will be open from December 16 to 24 in Pran Central, 325 Chapel Street, Prahran. Opening hours 9am-9pm daily.
