As you arrive at Alistair Trung’s new Melbourne boutique, perched on Little Collins Street, you may notice a quote from the designer himself: “I was always trying to bring the boy out of the girl, and the girl out of the boy, a man and a woman are different in body, but in soul and spirit we are the same.”
It's one of the many thoughts that Trung has penned for visitors to his store and label, and it nicely embodies the adventurously boyish but very feminine look his clothes have. Mostly monochromatic ensembles, black and grey dominate but the collection also leans into mauve, cream and brown.
Entering the store requires a descent down a slightly precarious platform staircase, and it is truly a plunge into Trung’s dark tribal-inspired world. Furs, leather, feathers, knits and interesting textures abound, these textures are also mirrored in the store’s fit-out. Dark polished concrete floors and grey cement blocks contrast with resin logs and walls and the torsos of mannequins made of rough white plaster, which are draped with striking necklaces from the label. Trung’s strong tribal references can be seen all over the store, with an entire section dedicated to his jewellery collection made from Vietnamese buffalo.
