Much to the pleasure of lovers of the cult label, Shakuhachi opened the doors to its brand new Chapel Street store on Saturday.
Founded in 2002, the brand’s expansion down south has been a long time coming, and one that was delayed an extra week due to a few last-minute touch ups. But with the racks polished, the clothes hanging and the doors open, Shakuhachi has finally announced its presence within Melbourne’s collective closet.
Opening on the first day of spring, the tangerine and floral palette of the extensive SS 2012/13 collection, The Young Ones, seemed fitting. The lounge suits, hotpants and signature silks lend themselves to sportswear glamour reminiscent of the 80s. And along with classic asymmetric dresses, a splash of neon and a stunning printed scarves, the designs will take us all the way through from a still-chilly September to a blistering December.
Like all good store openings, Shakuhachi’s had its own playful vibe, resembling an uber-stylish kids’ party, with lolly bags, party music and dress-ups.
Chapel Street is all the better for it.
