Aidan Joseph’s calling card is his comprehensive service. Having recently migrated from Ireland, his barbershop studio overlooking Port Phillip Bay – tucked within his beachfront apartment – is an intimate space where the cut is the priority.

The stylist’s partner, Cristal Cachia, takes before shots from her adjoining photography studio as the coffee is made and the conversation with Joseph evolves toward the nature of the cut.

“The moment you come in, I know what it’s going to look like when you leave,” he says. “What I do is all about the process; it’s all very private and intimate and in 45 minutes, pores are opened and closed and treated properly, plus you get the shave in there as well. It’s essentially a facial.”

Specialising in hair-art design, sculpting methodologies and cut-throat shaves where hot towels are layered across your face – already primed with Proraso menthol pre-shave – Joseph takes professional men’s hairdressing seriously, yet the banter while sitting in the converted dentist’s chair can head in any direction you like.

Throw your head back with the likes of Nick Cave and Irish instrumentalists God Is An Astronaut among a searing collection of musical overtures that help set the scene as Joseph reflects on your new look.

Although he worked with Peter Mark Salon in Dublin and Galway and had a spell with Schwarzkopf, it wasn’t until he ended up at Fat Tony’s Barber Shop in Galway that his love for true barbering really took hold. “They’d employed a bunch of Turkish guys to help out,” says Joseph, “and I had an academy within the space and was taken by the unbelievable skills they had…they just did barbering properly with all this method!”

The Aidan Joseph Hair legend has been progressing for over a decade now, with the man also having done time around some of Europe’s foremost hairstylists and barbers, including notorious London hair-tattoo specialist Mucktaru Kargbo (known as MK).

“It was about six years ago I started the hair-art with the open razor which is way harder than shaving – I guess I picked this up because I always get bored and need new challenges,” explains Joseph of his dedication to keeping the spark alive.
