Amy and Adam Coombes, the husband and wife design duo behind Kloke, prefer to take things slow. They launched their clothing label in 2011. In 2013, they opened their first store in Fitzroy. Four years on, they’ve moved into the CBD.

The new Kloke QV store, designed with David Goss of design and architecture firm Studio Goss, is a dramatic break from Kloke Fitzroy’s blond timber fit-out. Brutalist concrete forms have often influenced the Coombeses’ sensible and simple clothing, but here the inspiration is displayed overtly.

Rough grey stucco covers the walls and ceiling, while the floor, blockish countertop and bench have been smoothed over with a uniform light concrete. Colour is found only on the clothing racks and in the flourishes of greenery.

“It feels good to be able to keep progressing and show Kloke in a space that is really varied from our first store, while complementing it at the same time,” Adam says. “We wanted to create a space that reflected our interests in texture, sculpture and Brutalist architecture, juxtaposed against lush green foliage.”

With the pair now producing larger collections of their functional, hard-wearing clothes, this year felt like the right time to establish a space for the CBD.

Full men’s, and women’s collections, accessories and jewellery are available at the new store.
