Fashion designers love to collaborate with artists in other fields. It gives them an insight into a different creative process, and an opportunity to expand the limits of what they can offer.

The latest cross-pollination of this type is between Melbourne-based label Handsom, designed by Sam Rush and Henry Allum, and Sydney-based ceramicist Milly Dent. She has created a limited-edition collection of homewares inspired by the deep blues of Handsom's latest range.

“We instantly loved her [Dent’s] signature style of blue marbled swirls,” Rush says. “We felt her work could be a great fit in our own store, where we stock other lifestyle and accessories brands that we think sit well alongside Handsom.”

Although Rush and Allum have collaborated with other fashion creatives before – a Handsom X Pared Eyewear collab was a sellout – this is their first foray into commissioning homewares.

“We wanted the vessels – a bowl, cup, espresso cup – to be the same shape, and to be scaled versions of one another,” Rush says.

The simplicity of the ceramics matches Handsom's understated, elegantly minimalist approach to men’s and women’s wear, along with the colours of the label’s new season knitwear. Dent’s bowls feature a deep-inky-blue swirl on the interior, giving something of the effect of staring into a deep, almost bottomless ocean.

“Her colours are spot-on, and I love that each piece is unique and has a handmade feel,” Rush says.
