The word is out – NGV’s upcoming major summer exhibition will be The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. It will open in October.
The epic installation will feature more than 140 garments by the French designer, spanning 40-plus years of creative output and will be organised into seven, themed sections. The travelling exhibition is organised by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris.
Curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot said the exhibition belongs in a realm that is beyond fashion. “A lot of people ask me why Gaultier? Why fashion in a museum? I consider Gaultier an artist,” Loriot says.
Along with garments from the designer’s haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, Gaultier’s numerous forays into the world of cinema, music, art and photography will be a major feature including the iconic corsets and bras from Madonna’s 1990 Blond Ambition Tour.
Unique to the Melbourne exhibition is an Australian Muses section, highlighting Gaultier’s collaborations with style icons such as Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett and Andrej Pejic.
32 custom-made mannequins will be brought to life with high-definition audio-visual projections, giving an animated view into Gaultier’s surprising and dramatic designs that have challenged stereotypical notions of aesthetic and gender norms for over 40 years.
Loriot says, “He’s been so generous in his vision of society by not following the conventions of fashion and by not only using the typical beauties you see in magazines.”
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk shows from October 17 2014 to February 8 2015.
