Stepping into the new Elegantly Scant store on Degraves Street in the city is like stepping into your own personal dressing room, albeit one that’s filled only with lingerie rather than clothes.
The intimate boutique opened just two weeks ago, taking over from Smitten Kitten who are focusing on developing their own intimates label. The quaint, tastefully decorated space is the second home for this thriving Australian company (with their flagship store in Sydney).
Friendly staff will guide you through the store, proudly professing they have over 20 bra sizes: “we can fit anyone”, is the company’s claim.
Many woman wear brasseries that have not been fitted properly; this is a big no-no in the lingerie world. Elegantly Scant’s pieces are hand crafted to flatter a woman’s shape, and being fitted by an expert is just a natural part of the service.
The lovely service is backed up with equally lovely lingerie. Handmade, one-off pieces, vintage fabrics and alluring 100% silk kimonos that would satisfy a 1940s burlesque dancer adorn the walls. You almost expect Dita Von Teese to shimmy out of the change rooms.
Elegantly Scant began 10 years ago from a studio in Potts Point, Sydney. At first the lingerie brand was only sold from Paddington and Bondi markets. From there the brand acquired quite the cult following amongst locals and celebrities. Now they have two Australian stores as well as being stocked in boutiques nationally and internationally.
The pleasantly diverse collection ranges from adorable vintage florals finished with Chatilly gold lace to cherry red 100% silk 50s inspired sets. The fabrics really are vintage, so once the material runs out there’s no more.
Mum always said you should wear nice underwear in case you get hit by a bus, so why not invest in some.
