Last night, Collins Street welcomed a horde of fashion devotees for night two of Melbourne Fashion Week. Among the suits clocking off work were dozens of show attendees pounding the pavement with show-stopping gowns, playful workwear twists and well-loved denim.
Nods to cowboy culture, flapper dresses and ’70s-style suit tailoring point to our continual tendency to pull from the past. Statement bags are still a fashion week mainstay (as are sunglasses at night). The night’s street style served as a lesson in trans-seasonal dressing: light jackets and weather-appropriate attire showed that fashion can indeed be practical.
Inside Il Mercato Centrale (yes, the Italian food hall ), nine designers presented new collections in a show aptly titled Opulent Tastes. Atoir, Clair Helen, Clea, Gary Bigeni, Godwin Charli, Lovaan, Ngali, Perple and Saint Stella M took to the runway while guests grazed on tasting plates. As the extremely online would put it, they ate.
