After a year more or less devoid of live fashion events, Melbourne Fashion Festival made its return with an opening-night Gala Runway at the NGV last Thursday. The launch of the festival’s 25th-anniversary program was themed “In the Moment”, with looks pulled from David Jones’s 2021 autumn/winter collection.

An eclectic mix of homegrown womenswear labels – such as Bec & Bridge, Dion Lee and Scanlan Theodore – and big-name international fashion houses – including Balenciaga, Isabel Marant and Saint Laurent – graced the runway in the NGV’s foyer. Broadsheet photographer Charlie Hawks snapped equally luxe and loungy two-piece sets, billowing dresses, relaxed soft-toned coats and more.

Off the runway, we saw a sea of voluminous sleeves, statement clutches (including a lime-green version of Bottega Veneta’s Cassette Bag), and one particularly arresting newspaper-print look.
