In the current climate of fast fashion and mass consumption, those pieces that invariably last in a wardrobe are usually the classics: the little black dress, the tailored blazer and the perfect knit. Cosy, functional and always in style, a knitted jumper is the clothing equivalent of a warm hug – a wardrobe favourite that rarely falters. But finding that perfect knit is easier said that done.

Knitwear label Slade is all too aware of the power of woven wool and cotton. The Australian label has been producing quality knitwear since the late 1940s, when the Slade brothers set up shop in Melbourne after escaping Poland following World War II. Back then, in their Abbotsford store, the chain from design to customer was a lot simpler, but the label has managed to adapt to the times and, 60 years on, remains Australian owned and operated by Michelle and Brandon Givoni.

The secret to Slade's longevity is no doubt the timelessness of their products. Block colours in various styles and textures make for ideal building blocks for a wardrobe. And while the classic is at Slade’s core, the knitwear company is setting out to introduce an entirely new generation of quality styles.

"We wanted to change as little as possible about Slade, because the original styling with influences from the 60s, 70s and 80s can be so well interpreted by women’s different approaches to fashion, “says Michelle Givoni of Slade's approach to their new spring summer collection. “Today, women are more eclectic in the way they dress."

Channelling such an authentically vintage aesthetic, Slade has created a collection of timeless knitwear for today's savvy consumer. Even the campaign is retro with a twist, featuring cable front knits teamed with skinny jeans, shot within a sixties setting straight out of The Brady Bunch.

"We felt that in keeping the styles true to the original brand, we would allow the wearer to look more individual. It was more about creating a new outlook on Slade from a new audience."

The Slade summer collection is all 100 per cent cotton and features 50s-inspired cardigans, 60s mod-style black trim details and 70s polo collars. All together it's modern meets Mad Men and we all know how fashion loves a contrast.
