Jane Markac has owned hair and beauty salon Oxhey & Bushey on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy for the last 20 years. “Back then, there was Mario’s and Rhumbarella’s and that was about all there was to speak of,” says Markac who, just last Tuesday, upped digs and moved down the road to North Fitzroy to another burgeoning inner-city strip on St Georges Road, near MunsterHaus, Long Play, SuperMaxi and directly across from long term local Danny’s Burgers.
This time though the business is all Markac, finding the building too hard to resist and buying the freehold. Her husband Joe did all the renovations with wooden floorboards and lots of white walls (three coats of paint were applied to the stunning pressed-metal ceiling that was sitting under purple paint when they took ownership of the building) and stunning modern lighting which acts as a support for the natural light that streams through the large front window.
Upstairs is Oxhey & Bushey Beauty where Beauty Therapist Jo Rickard runs a smooth operation offering waxing, facials, massages and lots of other pampering. Despite the new premises the ethos stays the same as do all the staff who have moved up the road with Markac. “Oxhey & Bushey has always been about giving people the most beautiful hair they can have and being stylish and progressive while also using the most natural, organic products we can.”
