Business partners Nicola Caras and Rachael Hart wanted to open a window to the world of artisan jewellery. They felt customers needed a place in which they could peruse carefully before they purchased – somewhere they could visit more freely and more often than a retail gallery. And they felt jewellers needed a place to showcase their work to a wider audience.

So they started The Open Window, an online jewellery boutique which sells the work of Australian and international designers along with a select vintage and designer range.

“The currently listed designers are all from Australia but we have a few New York artists coming on board in the next couple of weeks and more will be added all the time,” explains Caras.

A former lawyer, Caras worked with the Dutch bicycle store Papillionaire after she decided to hang up her ‘law suit’ to pursue a career in fashion and design with The Open Window.

“We want the website to be not only a store but a place where people can come and browse, be inspired by the imagery and get to know the designers and their processes,” she explains.

Launched last week, the site’s layout is clean and inviting, with bold images that do the exquisite work justice. It informs with blogs, inspirational guides and interviews with the artists. “We feel the website is unique as the majority of the pieces are things that were previously not commonly available online – hand made, one off and vintage pieces,” says Caras.

Hoping to form relationships between the artist and buyer, The Open Window also offers made-to-order and commissioned pieces.

While an array of designers makes for a varied range, there is a common theme of delicacy. Each piece shows intricate craftsmanship and innovation.
