Like many happy accidents, the fashion label Mister Zimi, owned by local husband and wife duo Zoe and Jimi Paul, came about somewhat unexpectedly. It all started when Zoe had a leather jacket tailor-made from her sketches while on a Balinese holiday. When she returned home, it attracted too much attention from friends to ignore.
That jacket led to a bigger repeat order, which in turn led to an online fashion label. The couple soon relocated to Indonesia, further building an Australian presence via a series of pop-up sale stores. This brings us to the latest Mister Zimi addition: the label’s first Australian flagship store, which flung open its doors yesterday to the locals of High Street, Armadale.
Located at the rear of the picturesque, heritage-listed Kings Street Arcade, the Mister Zimi space is welcoming, eclectically decorated and filled with light. A psychedelic rainbow elephant head crafted from woven fabric adorns a stark white wall, somehow not looking out of place in the same space as an imposing taxidermy deer’s head and a bright yellow chandelier.
The carefree and diverse interior mirrors the unique, offbeat clothing on the racks. Morose Melbourne black is largely ignored in favour of a vibrant colour palette that includes mustard, navy blue, orange, maroon and a deep emerald green. While Mister Zimi are known for their colourful summer dresses, their current winter collection extends to various fashion territories: think deliciously soft leather and suede boots, jackets and leggings.
Bringing a friendly Balinese outlook to Armadale, customers can even custom order sizes and stock from the label’s factory if what they desire isn’t available.
Seminyak is overcrowded these days – save yourself the ticket and get down to Mister Zimi.
