For many accessory designers, getting their wares seen during the mayhem of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival can be a hard sell. Not so for the Melbourne Metal Collective, a group of jewellers who are launching Alchemy, a bewitching collection of contemporary jewellery.
The Melbourne Metal Collective is working magic at LMFF this week with the launch of Alchemy, its first jewellery exhibition. The collective, formed last month, includes design labels Estelle Deve, Hamish Munro, Henson, Van Der Glas and Young Hunting.
The designers have strong followings for their individual labels, but realise there are scarce opportunities for group showings. “It's really hard during a fashion festival for jewellery designers to make an impact on the official calendar of events,” says Andy Henson.
“We decided to create a platform for jewellery designers to showcase their work,” adds Candice Agius of Young Hunting.
The artists are making one-off pieces for Alchemy, which include unusual metal designs, human hair and teeth, as well as found objects. The design of the pieces draws on their love of lost worlds and fantasies. “We want to capture what is happening in jewellery in Melbourne,” says Andy. “For example, Candice’s pieces are unisex, mine are masculine and Estelle Deve’s are quite girly.”
The launch also coincides with the release of the film Alchemy as a part of the No Home fashion film screenings during LMFF.
