Two tables are offset by an uninterrupted border of parallel rails skirting the walls – left for the boys, right for the girls – and smart shoes dot themselves decoratively, filling lonely shelving and empty table corners. This is m.e & co fitters, a new retail space brightening Smith Street with a distinct lean towards a modern Scandinavian aesthetic.
White paint covers nearly every surface, unifying the space and creating a gallery-style appearance to which clothes becomes the decorative art. Pristinely hung or meticulously folded, everything has room to breathe in its allotted space and is interrupted only by the occasional potted plant. It's the vision of joint owners Mark Jury and Emily Jane Barrett, a young couple who set their intentions clearly on providing well-designed, simple clothing at an affordable price.
National and international labels sit side-by-side. For the girls they have Blak, Uzi, Skargorn, Huffer and Emily’s own lingerie line, Emily Jane, while Velour, Suit, Weathered and Mr Simple currently represent the handsome pickings for the boys, as well as in-house label by Mark, m.e & co. Melbourne's December Forever joins Sweden's Funkis to provide footwear options, and jewels from Sara Larsky, Drown and Verameat sit pretty beneath the glass-cased table.
Their ‘curated’ approach serves well for this small inner city space, focusing on hand-selected and collaborative projects to support not only established labels but up-and-coming designers, too. In the near future, we can expect an in-house basics range, online store and an exclusive line of shirts from artisanal designers, Brooklyn Tailors.
