Known and loved for its clean aesthetic and quality of design, Melbourne based label LIFEwithBIRD has earned a devoted following in its first decade. Since the opening of its GPO flagship in 2010, the label has expanded to Brunswick Street and Chapel Street, before this week opening a new store on the iconic Flinders Lane.
The gritty but bustling character of the Flinders Lane shopping precinct had attracted LIFEwithBIRD designers Nicholas Van Messner and Bridget (Bird) McCall since their label’s early days. The pair’s fourth boutique sits at the base of Bible House, a historic piece of Melbourne architecture built in 1898.
Upon entering the space, the bedlam of Flinders Lane is washed away with generous black-framed windows and a crisp white palette. Local design firm Wonder developed the new store, applying their knack for minimalism and crafty use of space to the compact area. Racks run parallel down the length of the store, while mirrors cloak the ceiling and back wall to deepen the space in a reflective trick of the eye. The white mesh counter is framed by a matching lattice grid, propped above ground level at the rear of the store.
Beauty follows function in every LIFEwithBIRD collection, so it comes as no surprise that the new boutique is just as practical as it is visually pleasing. The store will optimise its small size by showcasing the key pieces from each collection in a tight edit, including the label’s own leather accessories and jewellery by Kester Black, Van Der Glas and Allys Ellen. Inspired by the richly textured nature of the city, LIFEwithBIRD’s ‘The World Awake’ collection for Autumn/Winter 2012 is the perfect introduction to Flinders Lane.
