Leaving behind the nomadic lifestyle that comes with running a mobile hair and makeup business, partners Dana Leviston and Poppy Liu have expanded to bricks and mortar, taking up residence on Errol Street.

Dubbed Kenny and the Sunshine Girls, the space is devoid of the haughty pretence of many contemporary salons and seeks to provide an experience that surpasses that of just getting your hair done. Hang your coat in the wardrobe, make yourself a tea, leaf through the book collection or chat to Kenny the pet budgie. Whatever the case, you’re welcome to make yourself at home.

The décor draws on a pastel palette with shag rugs and hanging macramé planters to transport you to domestic setting of a bygone era. The salon’s 1950s sensibility resonates through its vintage trimmings, antique mirrors, swing music and dressing tables reminiscent of a silver screen siren’s powder room. But don’t let the girlish atmosphere fool you – this quaint parlour caters to gents and ladies alike. And with local photographer Natalie Jeffcott’s images lacing the walls, you can walk away with a picture or two as well as a newfound sense of style and confidence.

Working with everyone from famed rock stars, news anchors to bridal parties, Liu has wielded her scissors on all sorts over the years, with particular expertise in the bouffant beehive or slicked-back styles revered in the 1950s and 60s. And now that she’s finally settled in one spot, our every want and whim can be met with ease.

With grand plans aplenty, including a pop-up nail art bar and a vintage shoe chamber, this nostalgic nook is the place to let your hair down.
