Trust Karen Walker, front woman of New Zealand fashion, to do a complete about-face in shooting the campaign for her second SS13 sunglass range. Last summer’s infamous photo shoot saw Ari Seth Cohen, creator of the Advanced Style Blog (devoted “to capturing the savvy sartorial of the senior set”) photograph models between the seasoned ages of 65 and 92. But for Walker’s new range, titled Karen Walker Forever, the models occupy the opposite end of the age spectrum.
Shot by one of New Zealand’s leading fashion photographers, Derek Henderson, the new campaign features Claudia, Tyler, Elise and Alice-Rose, all aged between the tender ages of three and five. When asked about her about-turn, Walker says: “The idea of shooting kids as a follow up to first summer’s concept seemed obvious for many reasons. Kids and mature women are worlds apart in age but this group share a thread of optimism and happiness that excites us.” Hot off the heels of Karen Walker’s kid’s range with Uniqlo, the choice of pint-sized models is also fitting.
The eight-piece capsule collection – with four new styles – takes graphic forms to the extreme with frames that exude a playful, almost cartoonish mood. White and gold frames with blue reflective lenses are something Judy Jetson would wear, while the more classic black-lens glasses feature filigree detail that avid fans will recognise from her jewellery collection. With names like Siouxie, Underground, Rowdy and Peek-a-boo, this collection will get you in the mood for some carefree summer fun.
As usual, pretty smart thinking on Walker’s behalf – with these tiny-tots as models, you can’t help but think these sunnies are impossibly cute.
