39 years is a long time by any stretch, but in Melbourne retail it’s an eternity. So it’s no small feat that Feathers, started by Margaret Porritt in 1972, now has 14 stores and continues to evolve.

In recent years, you were probably more likely to find Feathers in your mum’s wardrobe than your own, but the just released Autumn Winter 2011 collection is likely to change that. Playing with texture and colour, the line features leather leggings, chunky cardigans, shearling coats and fox-fur vests in shades of olive, grey, on-trend camel and of course, Feathers’ famous black. Certainly a long way from the collections of old.

Feathers are also taking part in one of the opening events for L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Fashion Full Stop: Decades of Australian Fashion. A celebration of iconic moments in Australian fashion, it looks at designers, labels, styles and unforgettable moments from the 1960s until today. Feathers will be featured in the 90s section, with other designers participating including Jenny Kee, Morrissey and Romance was Born.
