The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) kicks off on March 4, with more than 150 events – including runway shows, exhibitions and workshops – running for the next 10 days. Some events are sold out but the fashionably late can still get involved. We’ve rounded up the best of what’s left (and there are plenty of free events).

Gala Runway 2
Be part of the opening spectacle of this year’s fashion festival – with A-list designers including Aje, Bec & Bridge, Balenciaga and Dion Lee on display. Limited tickets left from $59.

Menswear Runway
This runway, presented by GQ, celebrates the best in men’s fashion. It showcases luxurious fabrics, bespoke tailoring and forward-thinking designs from labels including Jac + Jack, Bassike, MJ Bale and Christian Kimber. Tickets from $59 (including access to the afterparty at Baroq House).

Studio Edit 1
Focused on ethical production and transparent methods of manufacturing, this runway celebrates the global shift towards a sustainable future for fashion. Featuring Elliatt, A.BCH, Mastani and Arnsdorf. Tickets from $39.

Fashion by Foot tours
Ditch the heels for your fanciest sneakers and discover Melbourne’s best independent fashion labels in these fast-paced walking tours. Learn from personal-style specialists about shape, colour and fit while perusing local boutiques in Carlton and Northcote. Tickets are $25 and are selling fast.

Style Swap
Dig out the ironic tees you bought in first year uni and upgrade them for something more stylish at this adult-only fashion party. Pick up quality pre-loved clothing with a cocktail in hand, or drop off your unwanted pieces, kick back and enjoy the food, music and fashion parade on offer.

The Plaza Block Party
VAMFF’s block party celebrating the end of the festival is back by popular demand. There will be DJs, runways, a clothing exchange and pop-up activities (including a live podcast recording of How Two Live by the Twoobs sandals team) – plus plenty of things to eat and drink. Entry is free.

EDUCATION

Big Questions and Big Ideas
A diverse panel of PhD and masters candidates from the RMIT School of Fashion and Textiles will discuss their research into the political, ethical and environmental complexities of the design industry. This is a free event, but you’ll need to RSVP.

Indigenous Fashion Storytelling Session
In a unique conversation event, Indigenous storytellers will reflect on how fashion can be used to share culture and better connect to community. This event is part of VAMFF’s independent program and is hosted by Australian Indigenous Fashion. Tickets are free.

The New Generation of Creative Collaborations
Join Australia’s leading artists and designers as they unpack the value of using collaborations to promote sustainability and social justice in production. This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2020. Tickets are $48.

From Sketch to Sample
This one is for those up-and-coming designers. Run by industry professionals and presented by the Victorian Curriculum Authority, this three-part workshop is for students looking to develop their passions in the fashion industry. Participants will learn professional design processes – from developing ideas to working with manufacturers. Tickets start at $10. Suitable for ages 14 to 18.
