Considering that it’s the lycra-clad cyclists who are most noticeable on the road, the casual rider or non-cyclist could be forgiven for thinking that it’s mandatory to wear special padded shorts and jerseys whenever it’s time to hop on a bike.

Fortunately, the creative minds behind Country Road and boutique cycle shop Tokyo Bike understand that most of us are perfectly happy riding around town in an outfit that can take us on the road, to the office and perhaps even to after-work drinks.

Marking the launch of its autumn/winter menswear collection, Country Road is collaborating with Tokyo Bike to set up the Cycle Shop at Country Road’s South Yarra and Chadstone stores.

“We wanted to address the growing popularity of the city-cycle movement in recent years, and to combine that with the sportswear trend that is coming into casual street wear,” says Country Road’s Managing Director, Sophie Holt. “… We don’t want it to be too trend driven, and the Tokyo Bike bicycles are minimalist and classically stylish.”

Country Road’s Menswear Head Designer, Kerrin Schuppan, notes pieces from the collection will make riding in the cooler months a breeze.

“We’ve incorporated a stretchy fabric, inspired by technical sportswear, into the tailored chinos, and the puffer vest will be a great layering piece because it isn’t too thick and won’t restrict movement.”

Tokyo Bike’s range of bike accessories, including brass bells, leather wine-bottle holders and the classic Brooks saddles will be on sale at the Cycle Shop. Shoppers won’t be able to purchase and ride a bike out of the stores – however, Country Road staff will kindly provide a referral to the Tokyo Bike shop.

The Cycle Shop is open now at the South Yarra and Chadstone Country Road stores until April 2014.
