At Corlection you’ll find rarefied heritage streetwear brands, particularly high-quality Japanese denim.

It stocks cult Japanese labels such as Momotaro, Pure Blue Japan, The Flat Head, Freewheelers and many more; labels previously only available to those who went searching for it abroad. And brands shown in the menswear bible Lightning magazine, which has long chronicled the vintage-Americana aesthetic.

The store originally opened in 2009 in Sydney and expanded into Melbourne in 2014. It’s on Russell Place in the city, next to I Love Ugly and caters primarily to men, but there is a small selection of women’s denim, too.

“We always wanted to open up a Melbourne store, especially me,” says Melbourne store manager and marketing coordinator Charlie Gao. “[It] is a city with such a great history and great culture. Like our products, it is quiet but full of beautiful details.”

Gao says “supreme durability” is the basic feature of all the brands in the shop. Also essential to these brands is the idea of “wabi-sabi”, which he describes as the “appreciation of things that age”.

“Most of the products, our denims, chinos, jackets, shirts, even our T-shirts, will age with wear into a more beautiful condition. It is like writing a diary with your body – when you look back into the aged garments you will remember things you did, time you spent and places you’ve been.”

“But we never define our customers ... we never define our style, either,” Gao says. “We believe everyone who loves their life will love high-quality products and we prefer to let our customers define us. We are just a store that brings in some things we believe are timeless and awesome.”
